Number of keepsake ultrasound centers has tripled in last three years

According to an article posted on the website of the Rock Hill Herald, which covers a large part of South Carolina, the number of prenatal ultrasound imaging centers has tripled since 2005. Also known as keepsake ultrasound, the industry has seen strong growth thanks to advances in ultrasound technology that allow expectant mothers to view amazingly clear 3d and 4d ultrasound images of their child. Most keepsake ultrasound centers also offer video in addition to printed photos and other products featuring the baby’s image.

While the traditional and sometimes grainy 2d ultrasound images are still used for medical reasons, many mothers are opting for 3d and 4d ultrasound to get the first good look at their baby.

“It’s a different twist,” said Pamela Manley, co-owner of 3D Dreams in South Carolina and a sonographer. “Here I’m interested in showing you for fun. The patient enjoys this. It’s like a bonding thing.”

Like many others, Manley started her business after purchasing a used ultrasound system. While a new ultrasound system can cost $100,000 or more, high quality used and refurbished ultrasound machines are available at a small fraction of that cost.
